Could Your Dog Be Pregnant? Why You Need To See A Vet ASAP

If you think that your dog may be pregnant and you aren't sure how long she has been with puppies or what type of care she needs, it's best to get her to the veterinarian. Many people think that a dog can resume eating a regular diet and that extra care isn't needed, but this is far from the truth.

You'll want the veterinarian to do some blood work and to do an ultrasound for your dog's safety and so that you can figure out a few different things. Here are the important things that your pet needs.

Ultrasounds

The ultrasound will show how many puppies your dog is carrying and how far along they are. This is helpful for you to know so that you can plan for when your dog is going to be whelping (giving birth). The ultrasound will also show if there is anything wrong with the puppies or if there are any concerns about the mother.

Bloodwork

Just like a pregnant woman gets bloodwork to make sure that she isn't deficient in any important hormone or vitamin, the mother dog needs to have this done as well. The bloodwork will show things like if anything is off with your dog's thyroid and if she has enough iron in her system. You will also want to ask the veterinarian what type of prenatal supplements your dog should have and if you need to switch dog foods.

Monitoring

The dog will need to see the veterinarian regularly to make sure that she isn't gaining too much weight and so the vet can check her blood pressure and heart rate. If either of those are problems or in a dangerous zone, the veterinarian may have to take out the puppies. Bad vitals could also indicate that your dog needs to be monitored during the birth of the puppies.

If you have any suspicion that your dog is pregnant you want to get her to the vet right away. You don't want her to miss out on any special care or treatment that she needs and you don't want to suddenly find out that there are complications when your dog is trying to give birth. The veterinarian will tell you everything that you need to know about the whelping process and what you need to do after birth. The vet will also guide you with the things that you'll need to have around your home for the mother and the puppies to use right away.
