4 Tips For Helping Your Pet Recover After Surgery

Going through surgery can be tough on any pet. This is why it is so important to be sure that they recover properly and without any other issues. The recovery process for pets is delicate because your pet won't be able to tell you if something is wrong, but they will be able to show some signs. Here are four tips to help you help your pet have a successful recovery:

  1. Keep them Warm: After surgery, your pet is likely going to be lethargic. When your pet isn't moving around a whole lot, it is likely going to cause them to become colder. This is why you should have blankets and a comfortable pet bed for them to lie in during recovery. You should also keep your pet indoors as much as possible while they are recovering because there are many hazards outside that can cause irritation and damage to the area that has been surgically treated.
  2. Monitor Their Eating Habits: Another important thing to take note of is their eating habits. First off, be sure to ask the veterinarian how often and how much your pet should be eating during recovery and keep it limited to that. You want to be sure that your pet is eating and drinking enough of it from there. If they are not eating or drinking, this is a concern to bring up to your vet right away.
  3. Monitor Other Pets: If you have other pets in your house, you want to be sure that you are closely watching them when they are interacting with the pet who has had surgery. Pets may notice a different smell on the pet who has had surgery and it could cause them to react in a harsh way to your pet. Be sure that your other pets are not licking or aggressively sniffing at the sight of where the surgery has been done or stitched up.
  4. Take Note of Anything Different: If your pet starts behaving differently, be sure that you take note of it. Be sure to be detailed and talk to your vet (such as one from Earlysville Animal Hospital) about it during the follow-up appointment. They may have some recommendations for you or they may have some medications to prescribe to your pet that should help them get back to their normal self in a quicker manner.

By utilizing these four tips, you can be sure that you are able to help your pet recover from surgery in the best way possible.
